Tavex is pleased to present the 2020 Canadian Bobcat gold coin, a worldwide hallmark of exceptional artisanship and purity. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin is crafted in 99.999% pure gold, the highest standard in the world today. Bobcat is the seventh gold bullion coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s Call of the Wild series. This unique bullion coin is a remarkable allegorical interpretation of Canada’s untamed yet beautiful wilderness and will thus be a cherished piece in anyone’s portfolio or coin collection.
The coin is embellished with the striking image of the bobcat (Lynx rufus), an opportunistic hunter that packs quite a punch, and has been observed taking prey much larger than itself. The bobcat is a solitary and cryptic animal. It rarely vocalizes, but will yowl during mating season, especially if two males are competing for the same female. The rhythmic resonance emitted from bobcat's gorge is portrayed as curved lines in the background of the coin.
The bobcat is often confused with the Canada lynx, but it is smaller than the lynx, with shorter ear tufts, spotted fur, and a white underside on its short “bobbed” tail. Its face more closely resembles that of a housecat, and just like other cats, it can hiss, snarl, purr and growl. The bobcat's sharp teeth shine dangerously on the reverse of this 99.999 % pure gold bullion coin. The Bobcat bullion coin is struck in a proof-like condition with exceptionally brilliant surfaces and enhanced engraved areas that reinforce the realistic likeness of the bobcat's fur.

The bobcat is often confused with the Canada lynx, but its face more closely resembles that of a housecat, and just like other cats, it can hiss, snarl, purr and growl. The bobcat is smaller than the lynx, with shorter ear tufts, spotted fur, and a white underside on its short “bobbed” tail. It also has smaller paws which makes it difficult for the bobcat to move about in the snow, and limits its range to southern Canada. The bobcat’s primary prey includes hares and rabbits, but it will also eat rodents, birds, fish, reptiles, even the occasional deer. It’s an opportunistic hunter that packs quite a punch, and has been observed taking prey much larger than itself.
Established in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint has in the past couple of decades been one of the market leaders in applying new technologies in the production of gold and silver bullion coins. Not only did it create the first legal tender silver and gold bullion coins that contained a purity of four nines, they went one step further in 1998 with the introduction of a special edition gold bullion coin that contained 1.02233 troy ounces of 99.999% (five nines) pure gold. The mint’s quest in perfecting high purity gold coins did not stop at the one-ounce weight mark. In fact, it reached new heights in 2007 by unveiling a Gold Maple Leaf coin that weighed 100 kilograms, had a gold purity of .99999, and came with a face value of one million Canadian dollars.
In 2014 the Royal Canadian Mint set a new standard in coin security with the introduction of its latest innovation called “Bullion DNA Anti-Counterfeiting Technology” which includes a process where a unique microscopic security mark is minted onto every coin. The centre of the security mark contains the number “14” (for the year 2014) and is only visible under strong magnification. This new technology adds another layer of protection against counterfeiting, and all Gold Maple Leaf coins minted from 2014 onwards will contain this new security feature.
The obverse portrays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The reason for picturing Her Majesty the Queen stems from Canada’s membership of the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth of Nations. By being a member of the Commonwealth, Canada has Queen Elizabeth II as its reigning constitutional monarch. Around the Queen’s effigy is her name “ELIZABETH II”, the year of the mintage, text "D.G. REGINA", and inscribed at the bottom of the coin is the nominal face value of 200 dollars.
The reverse depicts a bobcat with curved lines in the background of the coin to portray the rhythmic resonance emitted from bobcat's gorge. The bobcat is surrounded by the text “CANADA” and “FINE GOLD 99999 1 OZ OR PUR”, where the latter part of the sentence means “1 ounce of pure gold”. The coin features the initials PL of the artist Pierre Leduc and a micro-engraved maple leaf laser mark in the coin’s field. In the centre of the mark, visible under magnification is the numeral "20", denoting the coin’s year of issue.
The coin is encapsulated and sealed in a Royal Canadian Mint's tamper-proof assay card. The surface of this card is shiny and styled with golden maple leaves over a black background.
